The Other Girls

There's a moment in every young life when the world you've always known suddenly looks different. For Sylvie Argenter, that moment comes when her pony-chaise accidents into the life of Rod Sherrett and she finds herself unexpectedly welcomed into the Ingraham household, a home where girls exist on a different plane of reality than the one she's known. What begins as a social stumble becomes a portal into lives she never pause to notice: girls whose circumstances have carved them into something other than what privilege might have made her. Whitney writes with a peculiar philosophical restlessness, narrating from some future vantage where she can look back at her own youth and see both its blindness and its strange wisdom. The novel does that rarest of things: it examines class not as a problem to be solved but as a reality that shapes perception itself. Sylvie's gradual awakening feels less like a lesson than a genuine reckoning, the kind that leaves a reader wondering which of their own "other girls" they've failed to see.
