A Summer in Leslie Goldthwaite's Life.

The novel opens on the eve of a summer that will remake everything Leslie Goldthwaite thinks she knows about herself. She is seventeen, sharp-minded, and quietly miserable comparing her own ordinary accomplishments to the brilliance she sees in others, particularly her radiant cousin Delight, who seems to move through the world while Leslie watches from the margins. What begins as a story about two cousins traveling to the White Mountains becomes something richer: a quiet excavation of what it means to be worthy when society measures worth in accomplishments, beauty, and proper feminine achievement. Whitney writes with psychological subtlety that anticipates later fiction. Leslie's inner life, her tendency to measure herself against impossible standards, her hunger for purpose beyond the drawing room, feels startlingly modern. The summer unfolds through mountain walks, conversations about ambition and faith, and small moments of recognition that don't arrive as epiphanies but as gradual shifts in seeing. The book asks questions that still sting: Can self-worth survive constant comparison? What do women owe themselves in a world that measures them by others' reflections?
