Real Folks

Two sisters, Frank and Laura Shiere, hide away in the corners of their childhood home, their young minds grappling with something far too heavy for their years: their father lies ill, their mother is absent, and the specter of orphanhood haunts their imaginative games. As the girls play in secret, they weave elaborate worlds to shelter themselves from the grim reality closing in around them, sharing fears and longings with a tenderness that feels startlingly modern despite the Victorian framing. A. D. T. Whitney captures something rare in 1871 literature: the interior consciousness of children, not as cute accessories to adult drama, but as full emotional beings with rich inner lives and genuine wisdom. The novel traces their passage from childhood toward adulthood, threading through family upheaval, societal expectations, and the aching question of what makes someone 'real folks' in a world that often feels anything but authentic. For readers who cherish the claustrophobic intimacy of sisterhood and the particular magic of Victorian childhood narratives that take young perspectives seriously.
