The Lion's Whelp: A Story of Cromwell's Time

England, 1640s. The Civil War tears the nation apart, and nowhere is the wound deeper than at Swaffham Manor House, where Captain Israel Swaffham has marched off to fight for Cromwell, leaving his wife and daughter to hold the estate against a world that grows more dangerous by the day. Jane Swaffham is no passive damsel. She possesses a fierce will that will be tested as Royalist forces gather strength, as old friends become enemies, and as the political storm closes in on her doorstep. Her closest companion, Matilda de Wick, holds loyalties that place her on the opposite side of a conflict that threatens to make strangers of everyone Jane loves. The novel traces the fractures that open between families, friends, and lovers when allegiance to a cause collides with the bonds that precede it. Written in 1901, this is historical fiction of the old school: earnest, politically engaged, and deeply concerned with questions of conscience. Why does a person choose a side? What do they sacrifice to keep it? For readers who enjoy the texture of 17th-century England and the quiet heroism of those who stayed home while men went to war, this novel offers a window into a household at the breaking point.
