The Landleaguers
Trollope's final novel is a dispatch from the burning heart of Irish history. Set in the 1880s during the Land League's violent campaign against landlordism, it follows the Jones family as they inherit the Morony estate in County Galway, only to find themselves trapped between revolutionary tenants and an empire deciding whether to let them sink. The youngest son, Florian, becomes the tragic nexus of the conflict: sworn to silence by radicalized friends, hunted by those who see his family as oppressors, and watching his father's land drown in floods allegedly ordered by his own neighbors. This is Trollope at his most politically urgent, watching an ancient order crumble while the human cost accumulates in quiet, devastating scenes. It's a novel about what happens when the ground beneath your feet becomes political terrain, and everyone must choose sides before the shooting starts.
