The Harvard Classics, Volume 49, Epic and Saga: With Introductions and Notes
The Harvard Classics, Volume 49, Epic and Saga: With Introductions and Notes
Two foundational pillars of European literature, gathered here in translations that preserve their raw medieval power. 'The Song of Roland' is the great French epic: a tale of loyalty and betrayal set during Charlemagne's wars in Spain, culminating in the legendary ambush at Roncesvalles where Roland, the king's nephew, leads a doomed rear-guard against overwhelming odds. The poem pulses with the austere beauty of 11th-century French, celebrating martial honor and Christian duty while grappling with the tragedy of unnecessary war. Alongside it stands 'The Destruction of Dá Derga's Hostel,' a violent and supernatural Irish saga from the Fenian cycle, where ancient heroes and otherworldly forces collide in a tale of fate, betrayal, and apocalyptic battle. Together these texts offer not merely stories but the very foundations upon which Western narrative was built. For readers seeking the roots of epic storytelling, or anyone drawn to tales of heroic sacrifice and ancient fury.
