The Crimp

The Barbary Coast in 1920 San Francisco was a place where men vanished into the night, drafted into service on ships that would never see shore again. Henry Leverage drops us into this underworld of shanghaiing with a story that crackles with tension and moral ambiguity. Captain Gully needs six men before midnight or his whaling vessel sails without a crew. He turns to Abie the Crimp, a smooth operator with connections to every grifter on the waterfront. Abie's scheme involves impersonating a federal detective, but the scheme unravels when Holy Joe - a preacher shadowing the operation - reveals himself as the real law. The twist? Holy Joe has his own agenda, one that blurs the line between justice and vengeance. This is hardboiled crime fiction before the genre had its name, a tale where everyone is conning everyone and survival is the only currency that matters.
