The Ice Pilot

The story opens in a San Francisco tavern on a rainy night. Horace Stirling, a weathered sailor with a troubled past, has failed at chicken farming and feels the sea calling him back. In a seedy bar called the Blubber Room, he witnesses a murder and finds himself shanghaied aboard the whaling ship Pole Star, bound for the uncharted waters of the Siberian coast - terra incognita to most sailors. What follows is a tense tale of intrigue and survival. Stirling's cabin becomes a prison; the captain Marr has designs that remain opaque, and the crew's loyalties are suspect. As the Pole Star races toward frozen waters, another vessel closes in pursuit. Bells clang, shots ring across the wild northern waste, and the ship strains toward an unknown destination. Every door is locked. Every face hides something. This is adventure fiction with teeth - atmospheric, dangerous, and sharply observed. It endures because it combines the claustrophobia of a locked-room mystery with the vast, indifferent wilderness of the far north. For readers who want their adventures unforgiving and their protagonists forced to dig deep.
