The Climbers: A Play in Four Acts

The patriarch is dead, and the Hunters have returned from the funeral to face something far more devastating than grief: financial ruin. Clyde Fitch's 1901 drama tears open the gilded facade of two upper-crust families to expose the rot beneath. Mrs. Hunter mourns with one eye on society's expectations while her household crumbles around her. Her daughters maneuver for position as the family fortune evaporates. Meanwhile, Richard Sterling carries his own toxic secret, and his marriage to the fragile Blanche strains against the gathering pressure. What unfolds is a merciless dissection of American ambition, where everyone is climbing or falling, and respectability is just another costume that cannot be afforded. Fitch writes with sharp teeth about the performative nature of grief, the cruelty of favoritism, and the way money holds families together until it tears them apart. This is early American naturalism at its most bracing: no one is innocent, everyone is compromised, and the social order that seems so solid is revealed as scaffolding over emptiness.
