The Californiacs
1916
Published in 1916, 'The Californiacs' by Inez Haynes Gillmore is a humorous exploration of California's cultural identity. Blending travel writing with social commentary, Gillmore critiques the insular attitudes and regional pride of Californians, whom she affectionately calls 'Californiacs.' Through vivid descriptions and amusing anecdotes, the book contrasts the author's New England roots with the overwhelming pride Californians have for their state's beauty and cultural achievements, offering a satirical yet affectionate portrayal of life in California.
