Maida's Little House

What happens when a girl who has everything discovers that having less might mean more? Maida Westabrook, daughter of a Wall Street tycoon, has been surrounded by wealth her entire life, but also by illness and doctors' orders. After a surgery leaves her frail yet hungry for experience, a chance stop in a small town changes everything. A tiny shop catches her eye, and for the first time, Maida wants something she cannot simply be handed. Her father, delighted to see his daughter take an interest in something real, buys the shop and installs Maida above it with an elderly Irish housekeeper named Granny Flynn. The only condition: she must actually live there, actually work, actually build a life on her own terms. What follows is a charming story of a girl learning that independence is earned, not purchased, and finding happiness in the unlikeliest of places. Originally published in 1921, this is the second book in the Maida Westabrook series, but it stands beautifully on its own. Perfect for readers who cherish stories about young people claiming their own space in the world, and for anyone who has ever longed to escape the gilded cage of privilege for something messier and more real.
