Stories from the Iliad

The Iliad opens on a beachfront thick with tension: Greek warriors assembled, a plague devouring their army, and a priest begging for his daughter. When Agamemnon refuses to return Chryseis to her father, the god Apollo's wrath becomes a mirror for Achilles' own fury. The greatest Greek warrior withdraws from battle, and with him goes the Greeks' hope. What follows is a descent into devastation as Hector and the Trojans press forward, the gods pick their champions, and the shadow of death stretches across the plain of Troy. Havell's 1908 retelling captures the brutal poetry of Homer's original: the honor that destroys, the pride that blinds, the grief that echoes across millennia. This is not a sanitized legend but a raw meditation on mortality, on what men fight for, and how little the gods care. It endures because it tells us something true about rage and its consequences.
