Rollo in Paris
1854
Twelve-year-old Rollo Holiday is about to discover that the world extends far beyond his English doorstep. When his family decides to journey from London to Paris, Rollo finds himself at the threshold of an adventure unlike any he has known. His father, Mr. Holiday, carefully plans the route weighing options and expenses while managing his health, while Rollo's uncle George offers the boy a chance to travel alongside him as something approaching a companion rather than a child. The journey itself becomes a landscape of small discoveries: the logistics of crossing the Channel, the first glimpses of a foreign city, and the particular pleasure of seeing familiar things from an unfamiliar angle. Abbott writes with the steady, instructive warmth characteristic of Victorian children's literature, using Rollo's encounters with new places and people to explore what it means to be a thoughtful traveler. The book captures a moment when crossing the English Channel was still an event worth planning for, when Paris represented both excitement and the unfamiliar, and when a boy might learn that independence grows not all at once but in small steps taken alongside those who love him.
