Rollo in Naples
1858
In 1858, Jacob Abbott sent his young hero Rollo on an Italian adventure that would captivate generations of young readers. Accompanied by his adventurous Uncle George, Rollo leaves Florence bound for Naples, encountering along the way the peculiar customs of nineteenth-century Italian travel: shared carriages called vetturinos, negotiations over expenses with fellow travelers, and the cozy inns that dotted the road south. The narrative builds toward two wonders: climbing the smoldering peak of Mount Vesuvius and exploring the ancient ruins that surround Naples, the buried cities and temples that had fascinated travelers for centuries. Abbott writes with genuine enthusiasm for Italian landscapes and history, and while the pacing leans more toward educational conversation than breathless action, his detailed observations of a world barely changed for millennia give the book its lasting charm. This is a window into how Victorian children dreamed of Italy, when Naples meant mystery and Vesuvius meant danger and every mountain road promised discovery. For young readers who love travel narratives and historical adventure, or for families seeking stories that bring the old world alive.
