Overlooked

Anthony Kay arrives at the provincial spa town of Haréville with nothing but time and his faithful companion, a blind man's particular kind of attention. When he falls in with the novelist James Rudd, desperately seeking material for his next book, the two form an unlikely partnership: Kay will observe the town's colorful residents, and Rudd will shape their stories into fiction. But here lies the novel's delicious paradox , the blind man becomes the seer, while the writer struggles to find sight. The beautiful and elusive Miss Brandon becomes the object of both their attentions, a woman who seems to exist just beyond the frame of every scene. What follows is Baring's elegant meditation on perception itself: how we see differently, how truth becomes mutable, how every act of witnessing is also an act of overlooking. The novel works on multiple levels at once , a murder mystery without a crime, a love story without a resolution, a writer's attempt to make art from the raw material of unremarkable lives. It asks what any of us truly perceive when we look at the world, and what we miss in the looking.
