One Basket

One Basket opens with the story of Blanche Devine, a woman who was once the scandal of a small Midwestern town and has now returned to reclaim her place in it. She buys the shuttered house by the freight depot, wraps herself in her full-length mink coat, and waits for the town to let her in. It doesn't. Ferber captures the brutal arithmetic of small-town reputation: how a woman's past is a debt that compounds endlessly, no matter how she tries to pay it down. The stories that follow trace similar reckonings - women navigating the impossible space between who they are and who their communities demand they be. Ferber writes with sharp compassion about characters who understand that respectability is something bestowed, not earned. These stories matter because they excavate the invisible violence of moral judgment - the way communities build cages out of custom and call it virtue.
