Victor Hugo

Translated by Aline, 1845- Delano

1793. France is tearing itself apart. The Revolution, born of lofty ideals, has descended into a vortex of violence: the Republic executes its enemies by the thousands, while in the Vendée region, royalist peasants rise in brutal revolt, slaughtering republicans with equal ferocity. Into this hellscape returns the Marquis de Lantenac, ahardened nobleman who will win any battle, take any prisoner, and burn any village to reclaim France for the king. Opposing him stands his own great-nephew, Captain Gauvain, a revolutionary officer who believes brotherhood means showing mercy even to enemies. And watching them both is Cimourdain, the Republic's iron delegate, who knows that Gauvain's compassion is a political liability in a war for survival. What unfolds is a harrowing meditation on civil war: its logic, its atrocities, and the impossible moral choices it forces on everyone. Hugo wrote this novel in the aftermath of the Paris Commune, using the Revolution's own terror to interrogate how revolutionary violence devours even its most sincere believers. It endures because it offers no heroes, no easy victories, only the wreckage of good intentions drowned in blood.
