Nina Balatka
1862
Published in 1862, 'Nina Balatka' by Anthony Trollope is a novel set in Prague that delves into themes of love, class, and religious prejudice. The story follows Nina, a young Christian woman, as she navigates a forbidden romance with Anton Trendellsohn, a Jewish man, challenging the societal norms of the Victorian era. The narrative highlights Nina's internal struggles against familial opposition and societal anti-Semitism, making it a significant exploration of interfaith relationships in a prejudiced society. Notably, this work is one of the few published anonymously by Trollope, reflecting his attempts to disguise his literary style.
