Nibelungenlied (English Verse)

The Nibelungenlied is a thunderous medieval German epic that pulses with blood, betrayal, and an unrelenting sense of doom. Written by an unknown poet around 1200 AD, it draws on ancient Germanic legend to tell the story of Siegfried, a warrior of almost superhuman prowess who wins the beautiful Kriemhild, only to be murdered by Hagen and the Burgundian court through jealousy and treachery. But Kriemhild does not forget. Years later, married to the Hunnish king Etzel, she engineers a catastrophic reckoning that engulfs kings and knights in a bloodbath of staggering proportions. The poem crackles with tension, dark prophecy, and the terrible weight of oaths sworn and broken. It influenced Wagner's Ring Cycle, Tolkien, and every fantasy writer who came after. If you love epic storytelling driven by human passion at its most extreme, this is one of the foundational texts.
