Margaret Mackenzie spent three decades caring for others: first her father, then her sick brother, both of whom left her nothing but duty. When her brother dies, she inherits a fortune she never expected, transforming overnight from invisible dependent to wealthy eligible woman. But freedom, it turns out, is its own kind of wilderness. She moves to the spa town of Littlebath seeking a purpose, and instead finds herself besieged by suitors: a clergyman, a businessman, an elderly baronet, and a charming rake. Each wants something from Margaret Mackenzie. She must determine who wants her, and who wants her money. Trollope, writing in 1865, made a deliberate choice: his heroine would be middle-aged, plain, and sharp-minded, in an era obsessed with young love and beautiful heroines. What emerges is a quiet subversive masterpiece. Miss Mackenzie trusts no one, especially not the men who suddenly find her fascinating. Her greatest romance is with her own independence, and readers have loved her for it since.
