Émile, or On Education, is a philosophical treatise by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, published in 1762. The book presents Rousseau's ideas on education through the fictional character Emile, whom he tutors, emphasizing the importance of developing the mind while managing passions. It critiques established institutions and argues for a natural approach to education, making it a significant work in both educational theory and political philosophy. The book faced criticism from the Church, notably for its Fourth Book, which discusses religious themes. It has been translated into English multiple times, with notable translations in 1768 and 1912.
