Looking Backward
Julian West, a privileged Bostonian, tumbles into a Rip Van Winkle-esque slumber, only to awaken 113 years later in the year 2000. The world he knew has vanished, replaced by a meticulously engineered utopia where a singular, nationalized corporation-state orchestrates every aspect of life. Guided by a benevolent host and his daughter, Julian embarks on a tour of this new society, where an "industrial army" guarantees universal employment, comfort, and luxury, eradicating the social ills of his bygone era. Bellamy presents a vision of a perfectly ordered, egalitarian future, free from the chaos and inequalities of late 19th-century capitalism.
