Light Ahead for the Negro

Edward A. Johnson

1904

American Literature, Novels, Science-Fiction & Fantasy

This 1904 novel holds a startling claim: it may be the first work of Afrofuturism, envisioning a future America where racial equality has been achieved. The protagonist, shaped by his abolitionist father's legacy, travels to the South to educate freedmen, but an airship accident in 1906 leaves him unconscious for a century. He awakens in 2006 to discover that the nation has transformed. Through his encounters with Irene Davis, a nurse dedicated to uplifting Black communities, he grapples with how far America has come, and how far it still has to go. The novel functions as both utopian vision and pointed commentary on the injustices of its own era. It asks: what would it take for that light ahead to actually arrive?
