Question 1

What's the best Edward A. Johnson book to start with?

Accepted Answer

For most readers, History of Negro Soldiers in the Spanish-American War, and Other Items of Interest is the most popular Edward A. Johnson title on Lex. It's available free as both an ebook and a downloadable EPUB, so you can sample it before committing to a longer work.

Question 2

How is Lex different from Project Gutenberg for reading Edward A. Johnson?

Accepted Answer

Lex sources public domain books from Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, and the Internet Archive, but adds a modern reader (custom fonts, themes, highlights, bookmarks, dark mode), human-narrated audiobooks for the major works, native iOS and Android apps, and reading progress sync across devices. Project Gutenberg provides the raw EPUB files; Lex turns them into a reading experience.

Question 3

Is Lex free?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Lex is free to use for all public domain books and audiobooks, including every Edward A. Johnson title. No signup is required to read or listen. A premium tier exists for AI features and exclusive originals, but the entire public domain catalog is free forever.
