History of Negro Soldiers in the Spanish-American War, and Other Items of Interest
1899
At a moment when America refused to see Black soldiers as heroes, Edward A. Johnson insisted on the record. This 1899 account documents the extraordinary valor of African American troops during the Spanish-American War, men of the 9th and 10th Cavalry, the 24th and 25th Infantry, who charged San Juan Hill, seized El Caney, and fought with a ferocity that belied the nation's comfortable assumptions about race. Johnson meticulously catalogs their bravery while asking a more uncomfortable question: why did a country so eager to send them into battle work so hard to erase them from memory? This is not merely military history. It is an act of archival defiance, written when Jim Crow was taking shape and the achievements of Black soldiers threatened to disappear into the convenient silence of a nation that needed them less in peace than it had in war. For readers interested in the long struggle for recognition, this document is indispensable.
