Knight of the Burning Pestle
The Knight of the Burning Pestle is a five-act play by Francis Beaumont, first performed in 1607. It is notable for being the first complete parody play in English, satirizing chivalric romances akin to Don Quixote. The plot features a Citizen and his Wife who interrupt a performance of 'The London Merchant' to demand their own story, leading to a meta-fictional narrative where their apprentice, Rafe, aspires to be a knight errant. The play intertwines this with the romantic escapades of Jasper Merrythought, who must elope with his love, Luce.
