Hunting Sketches
1865
Anthony Trollope turns his celebrated eye for social absurdity onto the peculiar world of English fox-hunting in these sharp, funny sketches from 1865. The collection opens with a gem: the man who hunts and doesn't like it, a figure trapped by tradition and obligation into a pursuit that brings him no joy. Trollope dissects this paradox with the same precision he brought to his novels of Victorian society, revealing the strange hierarchies, the unspoken codes, and the peculiar pride that bind English gentlemen to a sport many secretly resent. From the enthusiastic master of hounds to the weary participant dragging himself out before dawn, these portraits capture a world where social expectation trumps personal inclination. Written with Trollope's characteristic blend of satire and affection, these sketches function as a delightful period piece on class, masculinity, and the performance of Englishness. They also stand as compact evidence of why Trollope remains one of the great observers of human follies.
