Essays on Russian Novelists

In 1911, American literary criticism was just beginning to grapple with the seismic impact of Russian literature on world letters. William Lyon Phelps, the influential Yale professor and literary arbiter who famously championed popular fiction alongside the classics, here turns his keen critical eye toward the titans of the Russian novel. The essays trace the dramatic evolution from Romanticism to Realism, examining Pushkin's foundational role, Gogol's uncanny grotesque vision, Turgenev's nuanced portraits of Russian aristocracy, Dostoevsky's terrifying psychological depths, and Tolstoy's epic moral force. Phelps argues that Russia's unique historical suffering and national identity produced a literature unlike any other - one characterized by emotional intensity and philosophical restlessness. Though written over a century ago, these pieces remain valuable for understanding how American readers first encountered these writers who would go on to shape modern literature. The book captures both the brilliance and the limitations of early American appreciation for Russian fiction, making it a fascinating historical document as well as a critical portrait.
