Ermanno Raeli

Ermanno Raeli is an orphan caught between two worlds: the sun-baked Sicilian earth of his birth and the cold Germanic heritage of his ancestors. This duality defines his existence, fracturing his sense of self before he has even come of age. When profound personal loss shatters his youth, Ermanno turns to philosophy, seeking answers in books and systems rather than in the lived world around him. But as he immerses himself in abstract contemplation, the novel traces his gradual disillusionment with both love and reality itself, asking whether understanding truly liberates or merely deepens isolation. De Roberto writes in a contemplative, melancholic vein, opening with a debate among friends about happiness and destiny. Is suffering the fatal condition of existence? Is contentment impossible because we seek satisfaction where it can never be found? These questions animate Ermanno's interior journey through a narrative that privileges thought over action, loss over redemption. For readers who find beauty in intellectual melancholy and wish to explore the 19th-century European obsession with identity and belonging, this novel offers a window into one man's attempt to think his way toward meaning and his ultimate discovery that some questions resist answers.
