<em>The Egoist</em> is a tragi-comical novel by George Meredith, published in 1879. It follows the self-absorbed Sir Willoughby Patterne as he navigates romantic entanglements with Laetitia Dale and Clara Middleton, the latter of whom seeks to escape his controlling nature. The novel highlights the challenges faced by women in Victorian society, where their autonomy is often compromised by male expectations. Notably, it critiques the egotism of men and the societal norms that dictate women's roles in relationships.
