Andreas: The Legend of St. Andrew
1906
Translated by Robert K. (Robert Kilburn) Root
One of the great surviving masterpieces of Old English literature, this epic poem grips from its first_lines. The scene is set: Matthew lies imprisoned in a grim fortress, awaiting death at the hands of the Mermedonians, a race of cannibals who have already devoured his fellow apostles. As he prays for deliverance, God sends Andrew, who embarks on a perilous journey across treacherous waters with his disciples. The voyage becomes a test of faith as Andrew recalls Christ's miracles and reassures his companions that divine protection surrounds them. What follows is a dramatic confrontation where the apostle's unwavering devotion unleashes miraculous power against the pagan hoard, transforming would-be victims into believers. The poem blends adventure, supernatural visions, and theological meditation into something raw and powerful. It endures because it captures something primal: the idea that faith alone can walk into darkness and bring light.

“There were so many little, beautiful things. The feel of the late-afternoon sun filtering through the windows after school as I did my homework. Fresh coffee to my lips. The smell of my mom’s hair when she gave me a hug. Things I’d taken in stride as part of my day. Let alone the things I’d never get to experience now.””

“What I know is that the people we loved on the other side are gone. I mourned you, like you mourned me when I died. But I have learned, as you know now, that the people we love are not gone forever. That everything we ever loved, ever did, ever said, ever read, ever experienced, comes back to us. See,””
