A Roadside Harp: A Book of Verses

Louise Imogen Guiney's 1893 collection carries the quiet urgency of someone listening for something just beyond reach. The poems drift through New England villages and Irish countryside lanes, gathering moments: a father's endless journey home through Boston fog, the rough music of peasant lives, the way light falls across familiar fields. Guiney writes with the particular melancholy of the 1890s, that late-Victorian awareness that the old world was slipping away even as poets tried to pin its beauty to the page. Her voice is precise and melodic, neither sentimental nor cold, but always reaching toward something lost or passing. The roadside harp of the title suggests music found in humble places, played by those who might not call themselves artists but who understand something essential about longing. These verses ask what remains when we try to hold onto memory, landscape, and the people we love. They offer no answers, only the careful preservation of feeling itself.
