A Cathcart or a Riggs?

Published in the early 20th century, 'A Cathcart or a Riggs?' by Roy Norton is a short story set in a mining town in the American West. The narrative follows Pearl Brown, a strong-willed woman who owns the Alamo Amusement Hall, and her complex relationship with Horace Ring, a reform-minded editor. As tensions rise between them, the story explores themes of personal identity, social reform, and redemption, culminating in a dramatic confrontation that transforms both characters and their community.
