Gratitude

Gratitude is a short story by Roy Norton, published in the early 20th century, set in an Alaskan mining camp. The narrative follows a group of miners, known as 'the Competents,' as they navigate moral dilemmas involving two central characters: Shakespeare George, who values justice, and Laughing Jim, a charming gambler. The plot explores themes of betrayal and redemption, culminating in a poignant reflection on gratitude as George honors Jim's complex nature after a tragic confrontation with another miner.
