Spencer Fullerton Baird

Spencer Fullerton Baird was a prominent American naturalist and museum curator, renowned for his extensive contributions to the fields of ornithology, ichthyology, and herpetology. As the first curator of the Smithsonian Institution, he played a pivotal role in expanding its natural history collections, increasing the number of specimens from 6,000 in 1850 to over 2 million by the time of his death in 1887. Baird's tenure at the Smithsonian was marked by his dedication to scientific research and education, which he pursued fervently as he served as assistant Secretary from 1850 to 1878 and later as Secretary until his passing. In addition to his curatorial work, Baird was appointed the U.S. Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries, a position he held from 1871 to 1887.
