Robert Stafford Arthur Palmer was a British Army officer, barrister, and poet born into an aristocratic family. Educated at Colet Court and Winchester College, he developed a keen interest in the Church of England and law early on. Palmer went on to study classics at University College, Oxford, where he became president of both the Oxford University Church Union and the Oxford Union debating society. His literary pursuits included a travelogue, 'A Little Tour in India,' reflecting his experiences during a trip to the subcontinent. After graduating, he dedicated time to education as the governor of Edghill House, a school for the underprivileged, before opting for a legal career, being called to the bar in 1913. Palmer's burgeoning legal career was cut short by the outbreak of the First World War, during which he served with the Hampshire Regiment. He was mobilized shortly before Britain entered the conflict and rose to the rank of captain while stationed in India. Palmer's military service included a significant role in the Mesopotamian campaign, where he commanded troops during critical operations. Tragically, he was killed in action at the Battle of Hanna in 1916. His poetry, including works reflecting on his wartime experiences, garnered attention, with one poem published in 'The Times' shortly before his death. Palmer's legacy endures through memorials, including the Basra Memorial and an altarpiece at Winchester College, commemorating his contributions both as a soldier and a writer.
