Robert Athlyi Rogers

Robert Athlyi Rogers was a significant figure in early 20th-century literature and religious thought, born in Anguilla. He is best known for his groundbreaking work, the 'Holy Piby,' which is often regarded as a foundational text of Rastafarianism. Written in 1924, the 'Holy Piby' presented a unique interpretation of Christianity that emphasized African identity and heritage, challenging colonial narratives and offering a spiritual framework for the African diaspora. This work not only showcased Rogers' literary talent but also his deep commitment to the empowerment of Black people through faith and self-identity. In addition to his literary contributions, Rogers founded the Afro-Athlican Constructive Church, which sought to promote a sense of community and cultural pride among people of African descent. His efforts in establishing this church reflected his belief in the importance of a spiritual and cultural renaissance for Black individuals. Although his life was cut short at a young age, Rogers' legacy endures through his writings and the church he founded, which continue to inspire discussions around race, identity, and spirituality in the Caribbean and beyond.
