Princess Der Ling, born Lizzie Yu Der Ling, was a prominent Chinese figure known for her unique position as the first lady-in-waiting to Empress Dowager Cixi of the Qing dynasty. The daughter of diplomat Yü Keng and Louisa Pierson, she navigated the complexities of court life in late imperial China, earning the title of 'commandery princess' despite not being of royal blood. Her experiences in the imperial court provided her with a distinctive perspective on the cultural and political landscape of her time. As a writer, Der Ling produced several memoirs and articles that offered insights into the inner workings of the Qing court and the life of Empress Cixi. Her notable works include 'Two Years in the Forbidden City,' which detailed her experiences and observations during her service to the Empress. Through her writings, she contributed to the understanding of Chinese history and culture from a woman's perspective, making her an important figure in both literary and historical contexts. Her legacy endures as a bridge between East and West, showcasing the complexities of identity and the role of women in a rapidly changing society.
“Her Majesty to the theatre. The performance took place on a stage erected in the courtyard, and Her Majesty closed in one part of her veranda for the use of the guests and Court ladies. During the performance I began to feel very drowsy, and eventually fell fast asleep leaning against one of the pillars. I awoke rather suddenly to find that something had been dropped into my mouth, but on investigation I found it was nothing worse than a piece of candy, which I immediately proceeded to eat. On approaching Her Majesty, she asked me how I had enjoyed the candy, and told me not to sleep, but to have a good time like the rest. I never saw Her Majesty in better humor. She played with us just like a young girl, and one could hardly recognize in her the severe Empress Dowager we knew her to be.””
