Hermenegildo Cruz was a notable Filipino writer and influential trade union organizer who emerged from humble beginnings in Binondo, Manila. He played a pivotal role in the labor movement, co-founding some of the earliest trade unions in the Philippines, including the Unión Obrera Democrática Filipina and the Unión de Impresores de Filipinas. His commitment to workers' rights led him to serve in the Philippine Assembly and hold significant positions within the Bureau of Labor, where he advanced labor policies from 1918 until his retirement in 1935. Following his retirement, he continued to influence labor matters as a technical adviser to President Manuel L. Quezon. Cruz's literary contributions are equally significant, with his most notable work being "Kun Sino ang Kumathâ ng 'Florante'" published in 1906. This work is recognized as the first attempt to contextualize the life of Francisco Balagtas and his renowned poem, "Florante at Laura," thereby enriching the understanding of Filipino literary heritage. Additionally, his biography "Kartilyang Makabayan: Mga Tanong at Sagot Ukol Kay Andrés Bonifacio at sa KKK" explores the life of Andrés Bonifacio, a key figure in the Philippine Revolution. Through his writings and activism, Cruz left an indelible mark on both the labor movement and Filipino literature, shaping the discourse around national identity and social justice in the Philippines.
