Harold North Fowler

Harold North Fowler was an influential American classicist and archaeologist whose contributions to the field of classical studies were significant and far-reaching. He is best known for his translations of several of Plato's works for the Loeb Classical Library, which made these foundational texts more accessible to English-speaking audiences. In addition to his work on Plato, Fowler translated the writings of Plutarch and edited numerous educational texts, solidifying his role as a key figure in classical education. His scholarly endeavors extended beyond translation; he was deeply engaged in archaeological research, particularly concerning the diolkos, an ancient transport route for ships between the Gulf of Corinth and the Saronic Gulf.
