A History of Roman Literature

Published in 1903, this comprehensive survey captures Roman literature at a moment when classical education still formed the backbone of Western schooling. Fowler traces the arc from Livius Andronicus, who first brought Greek epic to Roman audiences, through the Republican and Augustan ages, down to the silver age and beyond. What distinguishes this volume is its dual nature: it functions as both a rigorous reference work and a pedagogical tool designed specifically for students, with careful biographical sketches that give flesh to names and dates that might otherwise feel like dust. The translations, largely the author's own, render Latin passages into readable English while acknowledging their limitations honestly. Reading this history offers more than facts about Cicero, Virgil, and Ovid; it reveals how an earlier generation of scholars understood the Romans' practical, politically-minded genius and their remarkable ability to absorb Greek forms while creating something distinctly their own. For students of classics, historians of education, or anyone curious about how our understanding of Roman letters took shape, this remains a window into both Roman literature and the scholarly traditions that preserved it.
