Ethel Snowden, Viscountess Snowden, was a prominent British socialist, human rights activist, and feminist known for her passionate advocacy for social justice and women's rights. Born into a middle-class family, she became a Christian Socialist influenced by a radical preacher, initially focusing her efforts on promoting temperance and teetotalism in the impoverished areas of Liverpool. Her political journey led her to align with the Fabian Society and the Independent Labour Party, where she earned a reputation as a compelling lecturer both in Britain and internationally. Before World War I, she emerged as a leading campaigner for women's suffrage, later founding The Women's Peace Crusade to advocate for a negotiated peace during the conflict. Snowden's political views evolved after a visit to the Soviet Union, where she developed a critical stance towards its regime, which alienated her from some left-wing circles in Britain. Married to Philip Snowden, a prominent Labour politician, she ascended the social ladder in the 1920s, taking on significant roles such as a Governor of the BBC and a Director of the Royal Opera House. Following her husband's death in 1937, she returned to her roots in temperance campaigning and journalism. Known for her fervent and often controversial public speaking style, Snowden was a figure who pursued her causes with relentless enthusiasm, often disregarding conventional tact or discretion in her advocacy efforts.
