Charles de Foucauld was a French soldier, explorer, and Catholic priest whose life was marked by a profound commitment to faith and service among the Tuareg people in the Sahara. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by his grandfather and later trained at the prestigious Saint-Cyr Military Academy. After serving in the cavalry, he underwent a spiritual transformation and was ordained as a priest in 1901. De Foucauld settled in Algeria, where he sought to embody his faith through a life of simplicity and humility, adopting the name Charles of Jesus. He lived among the Berbers, focusing on a unique approach to evangelism that emphasized living as a witness rather than preaching through traditional sermons. His writings and example inspired the establishment of various religious communities, most notably the Little Brothers of Jesus, which continue to reflect his ideals of fraternity and service. De Foucauld's life came to a tragic end in 1916 when he was murdered at his hermitage, an event that led to his recognition as a martyr. His legacy has grown over the years, culminating in his canonization as a saint in 2022. The impact of his life and teachings continues to resonate, influencing new generations of spiritual seekers and religious communities dedicated to his vision of living in solidarity with the marginalized and the poor.
“the one thing we owe absolutely to God is never to be afraid of anything.”
“It is not necessary to teach others, to cure them or to improve them; it is only necessary to live among them, sharing the human condition and being present to them in love.”
“The moment I realized that God existed, I knew that I could not do otherwise than to live for him alone . . . Faith strips the mask from the world and reveals God in everything. It makes nothing impossible and renders meaningless such words as anxiety, danger, and fear, so that the believer goes through life calmly and peacefully, with profound joy- like a child, hand in hand with his mother.”
