Archibald Duncan MacKellar was a prominent Scottish trade unionist whose influence shaped labor rights in the early to mid-20th century. Born in Govan, he began his career as a draughtsman at John Brown's shipyard in Glasgow, where he quickly became involved in union activities. In 1913, he co-founded the Glasgow branch of the Association of Engineering and Shipbuilding Draughtsmen (AESD), and by 1918, he was chairing the committee that addressed the Whitley Reports, which aimed to improve labor relations in the UK. His leadership within the AESD culminated in his presidency from 1929 to 1930, during which he advocated for workers' rights and better working conditions. MacKellar's commitment to the labor movement extended beyond his role in the AESD. In 1938, he took on the position of full-time organizer for the London area, later expanding his efforts to Scotland and Northern Ireland. His active participation in the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) began in 1947, where he served on its general council and represented the STUC as a fraternal delegate to the Irish Trades Union Congress in 1951. He held the chair of the STUC from 1952 to 1953, further solidifying his legacy as a key figure in advocating for trade union rights and solidarity among workers across the UK and Ireland.
