Anna Garlin Spencer

Anna Garlin Spencer was an influential American educator, feminist, and Unitarian minister who played a pivotal role in the women's suffrage and peace movements. Born in Attleboro, Massachusetts, she made history in 1891 by becoming the first woman ordained as a minister in Rhode Island. Her commitment to social justice was evident through her involvement in various organizations, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, which she helped establish in 1909. Spencer was also instrumental in developing the Religious Society of Bell Street Chapel in Providence, where she articulated the religious perspectives of James Eddy, compiling them into a foundational document for the society.
