Where the Souls of Men Are Calling

Hillsdale is the kind of town where everyone knows your name, where Sunday church bells still ring and neighbors gather on porches to watch summer fade. Then the war in Europe begins casting its shadow across the Atlantic, and this sleepy American community discovers it cannot outrun what the rest of the world already knows. At the center stands Jeb, a young man raised by the Tumpson sisters, whose eagerness to serve his country wars with a growing, unnameable dread. When Marian returns home as a nurse, carrying wounds no uniform can reveal, everything Jeb thought he understood about glory and duty shifts. Colonel Hampton's thunderous patriotism fills the town hall, but his words cannot muffle the quieter sounds: doors closing, voices lowering, the particular silence of families waiting. Harris writes with piercing restraint about that threshold moment, before the telegrams arrive, before the uniforms appear, when a town still believes it might be spared. This is war seen from the home front, where the battlefield feels impossibly far until it isn't.
