Wings of the Wind

The story opens on New Year's Eve, but for Jack Bronx, there is nothing to celebrate. He has returned from the war traumatized and hollow, unable to bridge the gap between the man who left for battle and the stranger who came home. His family welcomes him with open arms, their warmth somehow making his isolation more acute. He dismisses adventure as a relic of a naive pre-war world. But his family has other plans. Jack finds himself aboard the yacht Whim, sailing into uncertain waters with his friend Tommy and the enigmatic Professor Dragot. What begins as an orchestrated escape from his melancholy becomes something far more dangerous: a search for meaning in a world that has lost its coherence. The open sea becomes both literal and metaphorical landscape, a place where past trauma might be outrun, where romance might bloom, where mystery might offer escape from the gray tedium of postwar life. This is a novel of its moment and beyond it, capturing the particular alienation of a generation that went to war and came back to a home that couldn't recognize their wounds.
