When Oriole Traveled Westward

In 1921, a young nurse named Oriole Putnam skates across a frozen New England harbor with two children in her charge when a racing iceboat sends them plunging through the ice into killing waters. A stranger named Teddy Ford dives in and saves them all, and in that desperate moment, Oriole's life tilts westward. Teddy carries a tarnished reputation: accused of stealing from the twins' father, rancher Harvey Langdon, he fled east and has lived under that cloud ever since. But Oriole sees something true in him, and she urges him to return to the ranch country and clear his name. Grateful, Langdon invites Oriole to visit his Montana spread. She accepts, and begins a journey that will test her courage, bind her to two motherless children, and pull her toward the mystery of her own missing parents. A sailor saved from the sea brings devastating news: Oriole's father likely perished during the evacuation of a ship called the Helvetia. Her mother may still be alive, somewhere on the ocean or in some distant port. The novel balances frontier adventure with genuine loss, and Oriole emerges as a heroine shaped not by safety but by crisis. It's a book for readers who love historical children's fiction, slow-burn mysteries, and stories about people who choose to keep moving forward even when the road ahead is uncertain.
