The Girl from Sunset Ranch; Or, Alone in a Great City

Sixteen-year-old Helen Morrell has spent her life riding the ranges of Sunset Ranch, but now her father is dead and she must run the operation alone. Grief settles over her like dust on the prairie, yet Helen is made of sterner stuff than most girls her age. When a reckless rider named Dudley Stone nearly kills himself falling off a cliff near her property, Helen doesn't hesitate to rescue him, displaying the kind of practical courage that will define her journey ahead. Through their growing friendship, she confides her two deepest desires: to clear her father's name from whatever dishonor haunted him, and to trade the endless sky of the western plains for the glittering possibility of New York City. The relatives she's never met represent both a connection to a world of refinement she craves and a potential key to understanding the father she lost. What follows is a young woman'sbold leap into the unknown, armed with nothing but her wits, her determination, and the memory of a man she is determined to honor. It's a story of escaping your origins while carrying them with you, and of discovering what you're really made of when the familiar landscape disappears.
