Viviette
Viviette Hastings has been engaged to her brother Dick for seven years, yet somehow they never marry. She returns to the family estate to find Dick bitter and restless, overshadowed by their more successful brother Austin, while Lord Banstead, a neighboring aristocrat, watches with keen interest. What begins as a genteel English country romance full of garden parties and witty banter soon darkens into something more urgent: a woman caught between duty and desire, between the man she's promised to and the man who might actually understand her. The brothers' rivalry for her affection becomes a crucible in which Viviette must finally decide what she wants from life and love. Locke's novel captures a particular Edwardian anxiety about women's autonomy, the price of patience, and the ways family bonds can both anchor and entrap us.
